24 years old London based drummer Mathias Bang (BMus(Hons)) has extensive performance experience and is proficient in most styles. He is a confident sight-reader and capable of playing to click live and in the studio. He has performed under a conductor and has a good ear for learning pieces of music quickly.
Mathias began playing the drums at an early age thanks to his musical parents who encouraged him by buying him his first drum kit and a handful of The Beatles records. Growing up in beautiful rural Denmark, he started taking drum lessons at the age of 10 and played his first live shows at the age of 13 including Big Band Jazz shows and musicals.
After spending a year at Klejtrup Music Academy, he got involved in numerous different musical projects playing everything from Indie-Rock to Jazz. Whilst finishing his A-levels he would make his money from playing function gigs and festivals. So in the winter of 2007, Mathias left Denmark to enroll in what was now his dream, to study at Europe's premier contemporary music school; Tech Music School in London. Here, he first finished the 1-Year Higher Diploma studying with renowned drummer and teacher Darryn Farrugia (Joe Cocker, B. B. King) and played regular live shows including performances at the legendary Lock 17 in Camden. During this time he also shared the stage with ex-Pipettes singer Rose Elinor Dougal (Mark Ronson & the Business Intl.). Later that year saw Mathias doing recording sessions with his own band at Townhouse Studios where the likes of Coldplay and Oasis used to record.
He then went on to do a Degree in Popular Music Performance (specializing in drums) also at Tech Music Schools (West London University). Studying hard, he received drum tuition from Jazz legend Sebastian de Krom (Herbie Hancock, Jamie Collum) and Session/West End player Elliot Henshaw (The Drifters, Shirley Bassey). His studies at Tech Music Schools included weekly live sessions playing a variety of styles mainly within the jazz idiom. Several musical directors from the West End shows would visit the school and performed with the students. This has made Mathias a hugely versatile drummer whose musical curiosity and ability span wide.
Mathias is now doing regular function gigs in addition to teaching drums at The Swedish School in London.
